- Need for Refresher courses for the drivers

"Learn traffic rules, drive safely, follow road discipline, update your knowledge of road safety, share the knowledge and be a responsible road user”, said Mr Amit Khatri, renowned Road Safety Communicator while delivering a lecture on ‘Communicating with Road’ organised by Public Relations Society of India (PRSI), Ahmedabad Chapter as a part of Road Safety Celebration Week -2011.

Delivering a key note address Mr J N Barevadia, RTO, Ahmedabad said “More than 1 lakh 20 thousand people die due to road accidents in India every year. In China, 84 thousand people die due to road accidents every year. Maximum fatal accidents occur in India, where an average 13 people die every hour.”

He further said “Gujarat has recorded a phenomenal growth in vehicle registrations in the last decade. In 1990-91, there were 22.33 lakh vehicle registered, while in 2009-10 more than 1 crore 80 lakh 72 thousand vehicles registered in Gujarat. An average 22% vehicle annual growth is registered in Gujarat.”

Mr Barevadia further stressed, “There is a need to use Public Transport System so that we can minimise the fuel expenses and can also reduce pollution by not using our vehicle. There is a need for driver awareness and refresher courses for the drivers. The citizens should be self aware about road safety. The amendments in existing laws should also be required.”

Mr Amit Khatri in his talk said, “We all should know the traffic language which is universal. Traffic discipline is a reliable parameter of judgement of the professional evolution of any city.”
He further stressed, “Awareness about road safety is a pressing issue and it should be addressed immediately. We should Learn Traffic Rules, Drive Safely and to follow Road Discipline. We should also update our knowledge of Road Safety, share the knowledge with others and be a responsible road user.”

Mr Vivek Shah, National Vice President (West), PRSI briefed about PRSI activities carried out by different chapters. Mr Vipul Shukla, Chairman and Mr Unmesh Dixit, Vice Chairman also spoke on this occasion. Ahmedabd Traffic Consultative Committee (ATCC) members were also present on this occasion.
